Skating in East Barnard
A winter evening skating party out behind a friend’s house. They’ve kept the pond shoveled off and encouraged neighbors to come skate. For this painting I wanted to capture what photographers call “blue hour,” that magic few moments after the sun has set and before the sky has grown dark. So I primed the sky pure bright white and left everything else raw linen so I could glaze the sky and capture the glowing light and the blue tints on the snow and the lights in the house have just come on.
